Steps to Transfer

Transferring to a new college is an exciting journey, and we’re here to help you plan for the transition. If you know that transfer is in your future, start planning today. Use available transfer tools and focus on taking courses that are likely to transfer to your future college.

Step 1: Explore your Options

Change can be a good thing. If you’re thinking of making a move, CUNY has transfer friendly policies and a great selection of academic programs to help you meet your goals.

It is never too early to start planning your transfer and taking courses that are more likely to transfer to your new college as general education or major/minor requirements.

USE EXISTING TOOLS
to stay on track. Speak with your academic advisor, explore articulation agreements and remember that if you are transferring from one CUNY to another, you have a set of tools to determine how your credits will transfer.

CHECK YOUR CREDITS, THEN CHOOSE YOUR COLLEGE.
You may not receive an official credit evaluation until after you commit to a college. If you’re transferring from one CUNY college to another, use existing tools to check how your credits will transfer as a consideration to help you select your future college.

Step 2: Apply

Ready to Apply? The CUNY Application allows you to select up to 4 college choices as a transfer student. Visit our How to Apply page for guidance on submitting your application, sending documents, and checking the status of your application.

STAY IN THE FAMILY!
Current CUNY students are exempt from paying the application fee and do not need to send official transcripts from their current college.

Step 3: Enroll

Accept your Offer

Once your application is complete, you’ll receive decisions from each of the colleges to which you’ve applied, and can accept your offer in the Student Center of CUNYfirst. Our Future Student Enrollment Guide is a great place to connect to various offices at your new college.

Receive Transfer Credit Evaluation

Once complete, your Transfer Credit Evaluation will display in CUNYfirst. Make sure to check how your credits transferred – general education requirements, major requirements or electives. A couple of days after the evaluation is posted, you should also review the DegreeWorks audit at your new college. DegreeWorks is another tool to help you see how your credits have applied toward your degree. If you have questions about your evaluation or feel that courses didn’t transfer correctly, speak with your academic advisor.

Get ready to connect!

Congratulations on your transfer! Transitioning to a new college is an exciting time. Take a look at your new college‘s orientation and support resources to connect with your new college and classmates.

PLAN AHEAD!
Your new college may request to see supplemental materials (like transcripts) and other relevant information about your coursework to determine how to best award credit. Visit your college’s transfer office page.

SAVE THE DOCUMENTS!
For most schools that you apply to for transfer, you will not receive an official credit evaluation until after you have accepted the offer, so hold on to your course syllabi, transcripts and other paperwork to help you make a case if your credits have not transferred as expected and you choose to appeal.

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR APPLICATION!
Once you’ve applied, you can review the status of your application by logging into CUNYfirst.
