Restricted Response Essay:

Describe the relative merits of selection-type test items and essay questions for measurable learning outcomes at the understanding level.

Extended Response Essay:

(Student is given a complete achievement test that includes errors or flaws in the directions in the test items, and in the arrangement of the items)
Write a critical evaluation of this test using as evaluative criteria the rules and standards for test construction as described in your textbook. Include a detailed analysis of the tests strengths and weaknesses and ab evaluation of its overall quality and probable effectiveness.

These questions are typically Level 2 and Level 3 using Bloom's taxonomy.

These questions were my favorite to write because of the many creative ways you can apply them. Essay questions are great because they show exactly what the student does and doesn't know and if they can apply that knowledge, but it also allows them to draw upon creativity in their answers. Adding one or two of supply-test items to a test can really demonstrate whether a student is really comprehends the information and is a good indicator of student learning. When used correctly these questions can reach all three levels of student learning. These questions are also a great way to promote reading and writing skills in all content areas.
